I've had a short lived, and i think ending, obsession with the little paper craft projects that you download online and then fold into buildings and stuff. Just another manifestation of my obsession with all things miniature I guess. And that's how I ran across this. Usually I look for buildings (I've got a fairly neat little paper model of Shakespeares "Globe" now), but I coudn't pass up a chance at a paper dragon.

Redefined and random babbling
I'm going to blog more. For real this time.
It might just be filler.
It might not be interesting.
But I'm going to do it more as an exercise than entertainment anyway.
So maybe this is more of a warning than advertisement.
If, within the first few sentences, it doens't sound like I'm about to say anything interesting.... it probably isnt' going to get much better.
I do have a plug for today though
(I have no career in sales what-so-ever, so I'm not sure if the soon to be mention target of said plug should be grateful or bothered)
There is an A Capella group from the UW Madison called Redefined.
I've never been much of a fan of A Capella. My feelings toward it have ranged from luke-warm to slightly sickish feeling.
When i first moved to Madison someone told me that I HAD to see the Mad Hatters. I'm always open to music suggestions. I freakin' love listening to new music, even when it's not in one of the genres that I normally like (I draw the line at country though, unless it's really old country then i'll still give it a chance). And if it's local music, that's even better.
I don't even remember where I first heard the Mad Hatters (crap, I'm digressing.... you might want to think about tuning out for a bit). I think it was at the Union. A free show I'm sure. And the lure of anything at the union tends to draw me more than if it was at someplace else. I think you could sell me on a some pretty absurd things if you throw in "and they'll be at the union. It's supposed to be nice out, and I'll buy you a beer".
One way or the other I saw the Mad Hatters, and I'm sorry to say. I just wasn't impressed. Somewhere less than luke warm but no where near the point where "I want to crawl up into my own ass and vomit. That's right, throw up in my own butt." (I stole that quote from Sheena Morris who, if you're looking for an good new artist is worth checking out. I've been trying to figure out a way to fit it into a conversation all day. I think i may hav failed).
Then... later in life.... We (me, wife, daughter) went to Duck Soup Cinema. ( thumbs up , in the family event category). And we caught a shortened version of a Redefined concert (http://www.uwredefined.com/). And by jorge, I found an A Capella group that I liked.
We've become sort of unofficial groupies (without the sexual undertones). We try to catch them whenever they do a show in Madison. If you see that they are perfoming, and you've got an open spot in your calendar that happens to coincide, I highly recommend giving them a chance.

It’s like mother earth, gaia, god, mother nature, whatever…. has been trying to tell us something. Trying desperately to warn us about something. But for the most part we ignored it. We’ve seen too many of those movies where the peoples ignore mother earth’s pleas for help until a single savior, a chosen one emerges, changes everyone minds, sets everything right and we all live happily ever after.
So we sat on our asses and waited for the chosen one. But he never came.
And then within a week, this week, three news stories come out. They make a ripple in the mainstream media, but go largely ignored.
Individually they are the same-old, same-old that we’ve become so desensitized to. But put together, or even appearing within the same week, it’s hard not to connect the dots.

“U.S. gasoline prices of more than $3 a gallon helped Exxon Mobil post a record $39.5 billion profit Thursday, the largest annual profit ever for a U.S. company.”

U.S. Rep. Peter Welch says it was a "stunning personal experience" to hear federal scientists say they had been stymied from talking about climate change.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, on which Welch serves, is holding hearings on the administration's handling of the global warming issue. The panel's chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said the administration appeared to want "to mislead the public by injecting doubt into the science of global warming."
Welch said he had read about scientists being muzzled, but, "It's a stunning personal experience to hear directly from scientists whose life work has been compromised, who live in fear of retaliation or compromised careers if they adhere to their code of ethics as scientists."
The survey found nearly half the scientists had seen or experienced pressure to delete words like "global warming" from written material. About 40 percent said thad had seen changes to materials that changed their scientific meanings.
The White House maintains it was trying to bring balance to reports on global warming.
Climate Change Predictions Not Exaggerated, Analysis Says
In recent years actual concentrations of carbon dioxide—a greenhouse gas linked to global warming—have followed almost exactly the projections of the 2001 IPCC report.
If anything, the IPCC may have underestimated some climate threats in 2001. For example, actual temperatures were at the high end of the predicted range. And sea levels have actually risen faster than the predicted.
"There has long been a muttering, out in the blogosphere and other places, that the scientists have been exaggerating and trying to scare people so as to generate more research money," he said.
"If you wish to accuse scientists of systematic error, Rahmstorf et al show that we have been a bit conservative, and clearly not alarmist," Alley added.
The report is also expected to say these changes are mostly due, with a 90 percent certainty, to human-caused emission of greenhouse gases.
"I hope this report will shock people, governments into taking more serious action," Rejendra Pachauri, the IPCC chairman, told Reuters news agency last week.

Wild Speculation
I try not to watch the speeches. The smirk drives me nuts. I got lucky with this last one, I had been up since 3:15 that morning, and my body didn't really give me the choice. I slipped into a restless coma well before he even started.
But I read the transcript the next morning. I prefer to do it that way. I'm a little more level headed when I'm reading it instead of listening to it, or worse, watching.
The internet is flooded with dissections and critiques. And even if I added my drip to that flood, it wouldnt' be a good drip. It'd jsut be more of the same.
What I'd like to do instead if lay out a conspiracy theory. Just for fun. At least i hope it's just a conspiracy theory.
I did run a little microsoft word script that breaks down a document into the words used, and how often they are used.
Here are the top words (I took out the ones pronouns, conjuctions, and more or less meaningless words. But what gave me shivers were the 6 hits for Iran. What does Iran have to do with any of this?
I happened to notice the 1 hit for Patriot as well. The twisting and perversion of the concept of "patriot" is near to my heart. So I looked this one up in context of the speech.
"We will expand intelligence-sharing and deploy Patriot air defense systems to reassure our friends and allies. We will work with the governments of Turkey and Iraq to help them resolve problems along their border. And we will work with others to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons and dominating the region."
We that's a little weird. Why is he talking about a Patriot defense system? The insurgents don't have missiles or aircraft. And where the heck did "Turkey" come from? I don't even remember where Turkey is for pete's sake. Thank bob for google maps.
Oh, there it is. Way up there on the other side of Syria, and to the west or Iran.
I still don't understand why the need Patriot Missiles. So I googled "Patriot Missile" in google news.

Reyes said there was no mention during the meeting of sending Patriot units, which are stationed at Fort Bliss. "That's the first I ve heard of that," he said."

Well that is odd indeed... just strange... Almost as strange as say... putting a naval officer in charg of a war being waged in a dessert. Putting a man with virtually no expereince in ground combat in charge of the military in a nation with 36 miles of coastline.

If it wasn't for the calm reassurrance of the president himeslf I'd be inclined to think that maybe Mr Bush was setting up a war with Syria and Iran.
